Celebrating the Power of Pro Bono at the 2025 Freedom of the Press Awards

Each year, ProJourn’s parent organization, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, recognizes the accomplishments of leaders in the news media and legal fields whose work embodies the values of the First Amendment at the organization’s annual Freedom of the Press Awards. On October 15, more than 600 people came together to celebrate the free press.

This year, Brad Kutrow, Partner at McGuireWoods LLP and former reporter, was recognized with the 2025 Freedom of the Press Pro Bono Service Award, which honors those who have dedicated significant time and support to journalists and newsrooms through ProJourn.

Brad has been a staunch supporter of ProJourn since 2021. His commitment to assisting North Carolina news organizations with pre-publication review and open records access is helping journalists hold those in power accountable. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, local journalists in North Caroloina provided critical fact-checking amid a wave of disinformation. Brad quickly stepped up to support the news organizations with legal assistance.

In addition to his pro bono work, Brad’s enthusiasm for ProJourn’s mission to grow the bench of media attorneys is evident, and he serves as a mentor for attorneys at McGuireWoods interested in media law. He has also brought in non-media attorneys to work with newsrooms for their operational needs through ProJourn.

ProJourn has given me the opportunity to reengage with the news media and First Amendment issues that drew me to law in the first place.

ProJourn is thankful for Brad’s dedication to ProJourn and local journalism. Congratulations, Brad!
