Volunteer for our Legal Checkups

What is the need?

When it comes to a news organization’s legal needs, understanding how to operate safely and sustainably from a business standpoint is just as important as knowing what challenges might arise in the reporting process. This session, led by ProJourn, a program of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, will help newsroom leaders assess and prioritize their organization’s legal needs.

How you can help

During this clinic, attorneys will guide attendees through a checklist, developed in collaboration with ProJourn partner Davis Wright Tremaine LLP, of key areas to
consider legal risk and needs, including business model, corporate governance,
contracts, fundraising, tax compliance, employment agreements, media liability,
intellectual property, and data and privacy.

Please note that we don’t need matter-specific attorneys for this clinic. It is a two-hour clinic, but we would welcome if the attorneys can only cover one session. Each clinic is capped at eight newsrooms total (four per session). Ideally, we have at least eight volunteers, but no more than twenty.

After the clinic, attorneys are welcome to volunteer to help the newsroom with their needs, though further participation is not required.
