Why an Incubator?

The ProJourn Incubator was created to further achieve our mission to increase the number of
attorneys, in both English and Spanish, who can assist with pre-publication review by
providing these attorneys with a deep-dive introduction to this area of law.

How it works

There is no expectation these trained attorneys will take on matters independently; they will
continue to part with a senior media attorney. But we strive to better manage and protect the
time of the seasoned media attorneys
by, for example, eliminating preparatory calls when a
ProJourn matter is commenced. We hope attorneys walk away with the ability to initially
review an article and share a first take on the legal review
. In parallel, we also aim to increase
our pool of mentor attorneys by reaching out to retired media attorneys, continuing to tap
into legal clinics’ resources, and recruiting new media law firms.

Who is it for?

Non-media attorneys, including bilingual attorneys in Spanish, who have expressed considerable
interest in learning how to vet articles and other media.

What should participants expect?

Curriculum: Three legal sessions in English and/or Spanish to provide a substantial
introduction to pre-publication legal review and areas of law related to vetting editorial articles
including: newsgathering rights, defamation, and privacy. The first session will include a critical
review of a news article and a hands-on collective review. Before the first session, attorneys
will receive “homeworkˮconsisting of reviewing previous training provided by ProJourn
attorneys and perusing a pre-publication checklist.

Instructors: The sessions will be led by seasoned media attorneys from ProJourn partners, including participating law firms, legal clinics, and other legal support organizations.

CLE credits are available.

Size: 10 attorneys per cohort.
